The most common brown rice problem is texture: too hard or too mushy. It almost always comes down to water and soaking. Keep this quick guide handy.
Brown rice to water ratio
| Method | Water for 1 cup brown rice | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Stove, firmer grains | 2½ cups | Separate, slightly chewy |
| Stove, softer rice | 3 cups | Soft, good for curd rice and meals |
| Pressure cooker (soaked) | 2½ cups | 5–6 whistles on medium heat |
| Pressure cooker (not soaked) | 3 cups | 7–8 whistles |
How long to soak brown rice
30 minutes to 1 hour is ideal. Soaking reduces cooking time and helps the grains cook evenly. If you have time, an overnight soak in the fridge makes it even softer; reduce the water by about ¼ cup.
Simmer and rest
On the stove, simmer covered for 35–45 minutes, then switch off and rest for 10 minutes with the lid on. Resting makes the rice soft and fluffy. Cooking time varies by variety, so check after 35 minutes.
Storing and reheating cooked brown rice
- Cool cooked rice quickly (within an hour) and refrigerate in a closed container.
- Use within up to 4 days.
- To reheat, sprinkle a splash of water and warm it covered, until steaming hot.
Storing uncooked brown rice
Brown rice keeps its bran, which contains natural oils, so it does not keep as long as white rice. Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place and use it within a few months. Buy smaller packs, like our 1 kg brown rice, so it stays fresh.
