Rice is the one thing every Chennai home buys every month, so it is worth choosing well. Here is how to pick the best rice for daily use for your family.
Step 1: boiled or raw?
For everyday meals, boiled (parboiled) rice is the healthier choice for most people: it retains more nutrients and has a lower glycemic index. Choose raw rice if your family prefers a softer texture, cooks traditional dishes like pongal often, or wants quicker cooking. Many homes keep both. Details: boiled rice vs raw rice.
Step 2: pick the variety
- Ponni: the most popular daily rice in Tamil Nadu: light, soft and easy to digest.
- Steam rice: white, fluffy grains; popular with hotels and for variety rice. See what is steam rice.
- Red and traditional rices: for extra fiber a few times a week.
Step 3: new rice or aged rice?
New-crop rice can be sticky and absorb less water. Rice aged for a few months cooks fluffier and more consistently. Ask us which lots are well aged.
Step 4: choose the right bag size
| Family size | Monthly rice (approx.) | Best buy |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | 8–12 kg | 10 kg bag |
| 3–4 people | 20–26 kg | 25 or 26 kg bag |
| 5+ people | 30 kg or more | 26 kg bag plus a 5–10 kg bag |
Bigger bags usually cost less per kg, and delivery is charged per bag (₹30 within 5 km of our shops), so a 26 kg bag is the best value for most families.
Step 5: check quality
- Grains should be uniform with few broken pieces.
- No dust, stones or musty smell.
- Check the packing date and the MRP on the bag.

Step 6: store it right
Keep the bag off the floor in a dry place and transfer some to an airtight container for daily use. More tips in how to store a 26 kg rice bag.
